Capturing the Magic: Photographing My Own Children in a Field of Daisies

As a photographer and a mum, some of my favourite moments are the spontaneous ones—those gentle, everyday scenes that turn into treasured memories. Last week, I had one of those moments while out walking with my children. We stumbled upon a field of daisies just on the edge of a quiet lane, and I couldn't resist grabbing my camera.

There’s something truly magical about daisies—so simple and cheerful, yet they create the most stunning natural backdrop. The light was soft, the breeze gentle, and my children were in their element, picking flowers and chasing butterflies. It was one of those moments where everything aligned perfectly without any planning.

Photographing your own children isn’t always easy. They know all your tricks and aren’t afraid to pull silly faces! But that day, they were so relaxed and full of joy that I just let them play. I didn’t direct too much—just followed their lead and captured the story as it unfolded. The giggles, the muddy knees, the way they lay back in the grass to look at the sky… those are the details I never want to forget.

As a newborn and family photographer, I always talk about the importance of natural, unposed moments. This little outing reminded me exactly why. These are the images that bring a tear to your eye years later—not because they’re perfect, but because they’re real.

It’s also a lovely reminder that you don’t need a studio or elaborate set-up to create something beautiful. Nature often provides the best backdrop of all.
